The Leader's Edge: June 2025

Welcome to the June 2025 edition of The Leader's Edge.

Hey friends,

This month, we’re tackling a topic every leader faces but few talk about: imposter syndrome.

That nagging inner voice that says, “Who do you think you are?”

We’re also highlighting upcoming speaking engagements, podcast episodes, a powerful quote from Everybody Leads, and our LinkedIn post of the month.

Let’s jump in.

Leadership Insight of the Month

Don't Let the “Smoke Monster” Win

If you've ever questioned whether you're the right person to lead, you're not alone.

In Lost, the mysterious "Smoke Monster" creeps through the jungle, shapeshifting and sowing fear.

That monster reminds me of imposter syndrome, our internal fears disguised as doubt, discouragement, or distraction.

Here’s how I’ve learned to fight back (with inspiration from Jon Gordon’s powerful book, The Garden, which explores similar themes of overcoming fear and doubt):

1. Doubt ➔ Trust
Lean into your process and values. If your decision aligns with your strategy and integrity, move forward.

2. Distortion ➔ Speak Truth
Silence false narratives with facts. Don’t let outside noise drown out reality.

3. Discouragement ➔ Encourage
Celebrate progress. I keep a memory stone on my desk to remember past wins when the going gets tough.

4. Distraction ➔ Focus
Step back. Zoom out. Remember your mission and re-center on your priorities.

5. Divide ➔ Unite
Hard decisions may not please everyone, but alignment with your values unites more than it divides.

Imposter syndrome thrives in isolation and insecurity. Leadership wins in clarity and connection.

What’s your reminder to stay grounded and lead forward?

LinkedIn Post of the Month

Back when I was a first-year associate, I received advice that changed everything.

It didn’t come in a performance review, it came on a long car ride after a stressful case.

My boss told me:

“You need to step up and own your career. Don’t rely on others. Lead what you’re trying to accomplish.”

That conversation redefined leadership for me. It’s not about a title. It’s about ownership. Responsibility. Showing up with purpose.

So wherever you are in your journey: Don’t wait to be called a leader. Decide to be one.

Thanks for Reading!

Here’s your reminder: Every time that inner critic whispers you’re not ready, not enough, or not the right person—remember this:

You are a leader. And you’re not alone on the journey.

Let’s keep leading together,

Tim

PS. Keep an eye out for the June Monthly Roundup, where I’ll share closing reflections, behind-the-scenes insights from the month, and book launch updates.
